Places of Interest Cellular Jail
This rather unusual jail was built by the British to imprison freedom fighters. It is called ' Cellular' because of the 600 individual cells! Don't miss the wonderful light and sound show. A museum exhibits a list of convicts, photographs and torture devices.
Mini Zoo
Located at Hadoo, it houses several species of birds and animals. The zoo is famous for its crocodile-breeding programme.
Wandoor
Just 29kms from Port Blair is this strikingly beautiful group of islands. Set sail on one of the glass-bottomed boats or snorkels available on hire to watch the colourful marine life. Most islands are open to tourists but you need special permission if you want to stay overnight. Jolly Buoy, Redskin and Cinque Islands are some of the most frequented islands here.
Jolly Buoy
To reach here, you have to take a motor launch from Wandoor National Marine Park. Jolly Buoy is popular for a circular reef that is exposed during low tide. Watch numerous sea cucumber, starfish, shells, turbots and conch shells.
Chidia Tapu
Located 30 kms from Port Blair, it is a tiny fishing village with beaches and mangroves. The island also provides astounding views of other islands and submerged corals, especially at sunset.
Ross Island
The British developed this place as a private island exclusively for themselves. You can see remnants of a rich past in the ruins of the church, the swimming pool and the chief commissioner's residence with its huge gardens and grand ballrooms. There is also a cemetery and a small museum managed by the Indian Navy.
Corbyns Cove
Seven kms from Port Blair, it is one of the most magnificent beaches in the Andamans. Nearby, is the Snake Island, surrounded by coral reefs. Andamans is a heaven for water sports. Sailing, boating, snorkelling and surfing are organized at the Andaman Water Sports Complex. Water skiing, water scooter and speed boating are also available.
